Sweetbay Magnolia Care Guide

Sweetbay Magnolia Care Guide

Getting Started with Your 4" Plants

Your plants arrive in small 4" pots, so they have limited root space and will dry out more quickly than larger containers. Water them promptly on arrival, keep them out of harsh afternoon sun and strong wind at first, and plan to transplant them into larger pots or a prepared garden bed once they have settled in and begun to grow.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist while your plants are becoming established. Unlike many magnolias, Sweetbay thrives in moist to wet soils and tolerates boggy conditions, so it appreciates regular watering and is a good choice for low, damp areas. A layer of mulch around the root zone can help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures.

Sunlight

Sweetbay Magnolia performs best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages the heaviest flowering, while partial shade is tolerated and can be helpful in hot climates.

Soil

Plant in moist to wet, acidic, organically rich soil. Sweetbay tolerates wet, swampy sites, and is moderately salt tolerant. In alkaline soils, leaves may yellow, so amend the soil if needed.

Fertilizing

Sweetbay Magnolia generally does not require heavy fertilization. Once established, if additional nutrients are needed, use a balanced fertilizer formulated for acid-loving trees and shrubs in early spring and follow the manufacturer's application instructions.

Pruning

Little pruning is needed. Allow your young plants to establish, then prune only as needed to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. To grow it as a single-trunk tree, remove suckers from the base as they appear.
